appearances are deceptive

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

It’s true the boy looked so innocent and seemed even a trifle shy, but appearances were deceptive. (W. S. Maugham, “Then and Now”)

appearances are deceptive = don’t judge by appearances

Thanks for your efforts.

A little more than that - Don’t base your judgement on appearance because they can be misleading.
