The conversation itself is a little unnatural, in that speaker #1 is rather rude in his prying. Further, ‘on the skids’ should be reserved primarily for 3rd persons in direr conditions, as with homeless alcoholics.

  • Why are you having a garage sale? The house payments are hanging over your head, aren’t they?
  • No, we’re just trying to clear away a little extra space to fit in some new stuff.
  • Level with me! You’re having some financial trouble, aren’t you?
