"A lot of" or "lots of"?

What’s the difference between a lot of and lots of ?

I am not sure about them, Could you please help me?

Hi Vsting,

They both mean many or much. A lot of is probably a little more formal and lots of a little more informal. Examples: We spent a lot of time trying to help her with her career.

You should see their new house! It’s got lots of rooms.

I just want to know why we say a lot and lots only without “a”

Hi Kory,

If you imagine ’ a lot of’ means ‘a large quantity of’ and ‘lots of’ means ‘large quantities of’, I think you can see why we can’t say ‘a quantities of’.
